Potentially the first percussive fingerstyle composition for Guitar Solo that uses 20th century classical harmonic concepts, Siren is a piece centered around the supernatural. Based on Olivier Messiaen's Regard du Pere from his suite for Piano, Vingt Regards, the composition uses a new scale invented by Messiaen himself, the so-called "Third Mode of Limited Transposition." The ominous yet beautiful long tapestries that decorate this composition are meant to convey how the call of the Sirens might have sounded in the Odyssey, hence the title of this movement, Siren.
